The Shivlee Collection contains one of the most extensive collection of Gold Coins from the reign of Chandragupta II. It covers the extensive varieties and types minted during this time including the most rarest of the strikes that were ever minted. Some of these coins are the only know specimen know to exist.
Two types of coins have been identified so far:
Both of these two types feature the Standard or Royal Sceptre or the rajdanda.
The coins in the next 2 pages are of the rarest types of Gupta Numismatics... these coins are one of 2 or 3 possible specimens known to exist and possibly the only one in this excellent condition in a private collection.
At this stage, it is important to understand that there really is not too much of a record available on Chandragupta I. Most of the gold coinage with "Chandra" has been attributed to Chandragupta II.
However, a study of the fabric, design and style of the Standard Type Coins, very easily points to an earlier mint style of the designs which could only have been prevelant during the early stages at the start of the mintage of the Gupta Dynasty.
