Kumaragupta I succeeded to power after the death of his father Chandragupta II. His reign lasted about 40 years and was one of stability and peace. By this time, the mints of the Imperial Gupta Dynasty had matured and the mint masters were eager to show off their skills.
The coinage of Kumaragupta I comprises of some of the most beautiful works of art in all of Indian numismatics.
During his reign, Kumaragupta possibly discontinued the experiment of copper coinage started by his father as there are only a handful of copper coins known to exist from his reign.
The Shivlee Collection today contains most of the rarest of the Gold Coins minted during Kumaragupta's reign.
