The coins of this type of Kumaragupta I are very rare. There are no known inscriptions of Kumaragupta referring to him doing an Asvamedha sacrifice, but based on the numismatic evidence of his coins, it is apparent that he did perform the sacrifice.
In the Asvamedha coins of K1, we find two varieties:
Variety A: Horse to the right
There are 6 specimen known of this variety A - one each in the British Museum, National museum New Delhi (Bayana Hoard # 1803), State Museum Lucknow and the Bharat Kala Bhavan.
Variety B: Horse to the left
Coins of this variety, the horse facing to the left, is the rarest with only two known specimen known to exist, both were found in the Bayana Hoard - one is in the Baratpur Palace cabinet (BH # 1806) and the second specimen is in the Bharat Kala Bhavan, Varanasi (BH# 1805). A third specimen is shown below.
These coins were struck to the 127 grains standard, 8.23gms.
