Kumaragupta I  -  Kartikeya Type


Three varieties of this type are known:

Var A - King on the obverse stands upright and Kartikeya on the reverse is three fourths to left.

Var B - Muscular King with pearl necklace is stooping with his right hand over peacocks head and Kartikeya is facing to front.

Var C - Muscular King with pearl necklace is stooping with his right hand over peacocks head and Kartikeya is facing to front, however, in this variety, the King is shown with a Dagger on his right side.

Note:  Altekar only lists two Varieties: A & B.   This new Variety C is featured here for the first time.

Obverse:  Jayati svagunair guna... Mahendrakumarah  - Victorious is Mahendrakumara.

Reverse:  Kartikeya riding on a peacock, holding a Flag (?) in left hand.  Legend:
Srimahendrakumarah

Variety B

This coin was featured in the article G.M. Browne, "New readings of legends on Gupta gold dinaras," AJN 5-6  (1993-94), p.162, 2, pl.18, 2.

Nimbate king Kumaragupta standing facing left, feeding peacock.  Legend is in Vegavati metre, Jayati svagunaigunaragra...   8.26gm.
