SKANDAGUPTA (455-468 AD)

King and Lakshmi Type
SKANDAGUPTA KING & QUEEN TYPE COIN
SKANDAGUPTA KING & QUEEN TYPE COIN

Obverse:  This type of coin is referred to as the King and Lakshmi Type.  Here the mint masters have combined elements from designs of previous Archer type, Standard type and the King and Queen Types.

In the King and Queen types of Samudaragupta, Chandragupta I and Kumaragupta I - the Queen is always on the left and the King is always shown offering something to the Queen.

King is on the left and the lady is shown on the right is offering something to the King with her right hand.  This lady could be goddess lakshmi as she is shown holding a lotus stalk in her left hand.

King is shown wearing a dhoti with necklace and armlet, holding a bow in left hand. Bowstring facing Lakshmi.

Between King and Lakshmi is the Royal Garuda bird on the standard.

Legend: Not completely deciphered ...
jayati ...

Reverse:  Goddess Lakshmi seated on lotus.

Legend:
Sri Skandagupta
